IMO praises Iraq's commitment to implementing the requirements of maritime

    The International Maritime Organization - IMO praised, on Monday Iraq's commitment to implementing the international requirements for the maritime sector, stressing that Iraq has qualified staff capable of managing this file with high efficiency.

    "In the implementation of the government program aimed at developing Iraqi institutions and enhancing their ability to adapt to global changes, the General Company for Iraqi Ports has succeeded in consolidating its position as one of the largest economic companies in the country, as it manages one of the most important economic projects for the Iraqi state," said the Director General of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, in a special statement to the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

    Al-Fartousi pointed out that "the company has been working for more than three years to enhance cooperation and openness to the outside world, which has contributed to attracting many international organizations concerned with the maritime sector, most notably the International Maritime Organization, which is concerned with protecting the marine environment and ensuring the safety of workers in this vital sector for Iraq."

    "Iraq has witnessed many important visits by international organizations during the past period, within the framework of the agreements and protocols that have been signed," pointing out that the Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, "had extended an official invitation to the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dominguez, to visit Iraq, which was accepted," as he began his visit yesterday inspecting the port of Umm Qasr, and continued his visit today by moving to the port of Faw to see Iraq's commitment to implementing the international requirements for the maritime sector.

    He confirmed that Dominguez, praised Iraq's commitment in this regard, "considering that Iraq is moving towards a great openness in its maritime sector, thanks to its possession of qualified young cadres capable of managing this file with high efficiency."

    Al-Fartousi revealed that an official request had been submitted to the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization to provide scholarships for the company's cadres to complete their doctoral studies, in addition to a plan prepared by the company to train and develop national staff by enrolling them in academic programs at the International Maritime University, the only university in the world that operates under the supervision of the International Maritime Organization.

    "The plan includes sending a number of marine engineers with a bachelor's degree to complete their master's and doctoral degrees, which reflects the deep strategic vision of the Iraqi government in developing its staff, and its keenness to cooperate with the international community to meet all global requirements," he included.

    Al-Fartousi stressed that "these efforts come within the vision of the current Iraqi government to enhance Iraq's position on the global maritime map, by investing in the Faw Port and Development Road project, which represents one of the largest economic projects in the region."

    He concluded his statement by emphasizing that "the sound management of this project reflects Iraq's commitment to developing its maritime sector according to the latest international standards, which enhances its competitive capabilities and opens new horizons for economic and commercial growth."
