Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadhil, confirmed today, Thursday, that the services government headed by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has developed solid plans to reform the energy situation while indicating that clean energy and combined cycle projects are being implemented for the first time during the current government’s term.

The Minister of Electricity said during the opening of three new projects in Karbala Governorate: “We meet today in the holy city of Karbala, which is receiving millions of visitors these days offering their condolences on the Arbaeen of Imam Hussein (PBUH), and this unique spiritual atmosphere reminds us of the greatness and sanctity of this city and inspires us to do more in serving it and its honourable visitors.”

He added, "The services government headed by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has developed solid plans to reform the electricity situation that has suffered for a long time, including implementing energy production projects, other projects in the transportation sector, and projects to relieve bottlenecks."

He continued, "We are pleased to lay the foundation stone for three promising projects in the holy city of Karbala:

First: A solar power plant project in the Karbala River area with a capacity of 300 megawatts, as part of a government clean energy strategy.

Second: Laying the foundation stone for the construction of an ultra-high voltage station (400 kV), which is part of a larger project to construct 5 stations across the country, implemented by the German company Siemens, to solve a large part of the bottlenecks that the electrical system suffers from.

Third: Laying the foundation stone for the project to convert the simple cycle at the Karbala gas station into a combined cycle, with a capacity of 132 megawatts, with a completion period extending to 24 months.

He pointed out that "the projects whose contracts were concluded during the life of this government and entered into force will bring about a qualitative shift in the electrical energy system, and their impact will be positively reflected on the efficiency of energy production, transmission and distribution throughout the country."

He pointed out that "the pride of the opening of these projects and the achievements that were made in a short period, from the opening of the Iraqi-Jordanian connection line, followed by the Iraqi-Turkish connection line, as well as the opening of a new power station in Dibs (the contract for its implementation and completion was concluded during the life of the current government)," noting that "the electricity men faced excessive energy consumption this summer, despite the success of our ministry in increasing energy production for the first time to about (27,500) megawatts, this increase did not match the level of increased consumption that reached this summer."

He pointed out that "we are working with the support and guidance of the Prime Minister to develop well-studied and solid plans to control the level of consumption and modernize the infrastructure of the electrical system to ensure a stable and sustainable supply for all governorates during the coming period."
