The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, announced today, Tuesday, the issuance of 18 passports to Iraqis wishing to return from Latvian lands.
Al-Sahaf said, in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "after appeals received by the ministry, the Minister of Foreign Affairs directed our embassy in Warsaw to send a consular delegation to the border between Latvia and Belarus, to grant transit passports to those wishing to return willingly and to determine the humanitarian situation of those stranded there."
He added, "18 transit passports have been issued so far, and the delegation succeeded in persuading the Latvian side to enter eight Iraqis stranded at the border into Latvian lands and complete the procedures for their voluntary return to Iraq, and this is a precedent for which the Latvian side is grateful."
