Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates emphasized on Saturday the crucial need for continued international support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA(.

In a statement, the ministry highlighted that the agency plays an indispensable role for Palestinian refugees, asserting their right to return and receive compensation in accordance with international law.

The ministry expressed regret over Sweden’s decision to halt funding for UNRWA, urging the Swedish government to reconsider its stance, particularly given Sweden’s long-standing political and financial support for the UNRWA.

Official spokesman for the ministry, Ambassador Dr. Sufian al-Qudah, reaffirmed the importance of the mandate granted to UNRWA under its UN assignment, stressing the necessity for continued international financial and political support to ensure the agency’s ability to provide essential services to Palestinian refugees in its five areas of operation.

He also emphasized Jordan’s rejection of any measures aimed at replacing the agency with other UN organizations or undermining its mandate and powers, or reducing or diverting its services to refugees.

Al-Qudah noted that the provision of these services is a responsibility exclusive to UNRWA under its UN mandate, and that its powers and responsibilities are non-transferable.
