The Arab Tourism Organisation-ATO announced on Tuesday that Baghdad has been chosen as the Arab Tourism Capital for the year 2025.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), ATO revealed that it concluded its participation in the 27th session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism at the General Secretariat of the Arab League, during which Baghdad was selected as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2025. This decision follows Baghdad’s successful fulfilment of the criteria established by the Arab Tourism Organisation for selecting the Arab Tourism Capital.
The criteria focused on indicators such as tourism management, tourism infrastructure, tourism resources, the diversity of tourism styles and activities, environmental protection, the city’s response to emerging tourism trends, the expected results of tourism development, as well as safety, security, stability, and health safety. The Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism welcomed Baghdad’s selection during its meeting at the Arab League’s General Secretariat.
Bandar bin Fahd Al Fuhaid, President of the Arab Tourism Organisation, congratulated President of Iraq Abdul Latif Rashid, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, the Iraqi government, and the people of Iraq on this occasion. He explained that the purpose of selecting an Arab city as the Arab Tourism Capital is to enhance intra-Arab tourism and highlight the unique customs, traditions, and tourism values of each city chosen. It also aims to strengthen the role of tourism in supporting the Arab tourism industry and fostering connections with other cultures and civilizations.
He emphasized that several events and programs will be organized throughout 2025 in Baghdad to promote intra-Arab and regional tourism in Iraq. Additionally, the organisation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities, will launch a celebration to inaugurate Baghdad as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2025 at the beginning of the year.
