Rashid to the UN Representative: We hope for a major role for the United Nations to stop aggression against Palestinian and Lebanese peoples

    President of the Republic Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid confirmed, today, Wednesday, Iraq's position in support of the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinians to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state, and solidarity with the Lebanese people in confronting the aggression, while expressing his hope that the United Nations will play a greater role in stopping the aggression against the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples.
     
    The media department of the Presidency of the Republic said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): that "President of the Republic Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid received the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Head of the UNAMI Mission, Mohammed Al-Hassan, and his deputy Claudio Cordone."
     
     "At the beginning of the meeting, the Special Representative conveyed the greetings of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to the President, while the President conveyed the Special Representative with his greetings to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his wishes for success."
     "The President of the Republic welcomed the new UNAMI chief and congratulated him on assuming the new position in Iraq, wishing him success and good luck," indicating that "the Presidency of the Republic will provide him with support and assistance to carry out his duties, and he also affirmed Iraq's determination to strengthen relations and expand prospects of cooperation with the United Nations and its affiliated organizations."
    It indicated, "The overall political and economic situation in Iraq and the role of the United Nations in establishing international peace and security and implementing human rights standards were discussed, in addition to its efforts to address and end the issue of displaced persons and migrants, as well as climate change and ways to confront it."
    The President of the Republic indicated according to the statement that "our priorities are focused on consolidating security and stability in the country, in addition to following up on the implementation of the government's program aimed at improving the living and service conditions of the Iraqi citizen and enhancing peaceful coexistence among all components," expressing his hope that "the United Nations will play a greater role in stopping the aggression against the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples and providing the necessary assistance to the displaced, and working to consolidate security and peace, stressing Iraq's position in support of the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinians to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state, and solidarity with the Lebanese people in confronting the aggression."
    For his part, Mohammed Al-Hassan expressed according to the statement his "happiness to work in Iraq as a representative of the Secretary-General, and his aspiration to build close relations that contribute to achieving the goals of the international organization in providing assistance to Iraq, which is one of the founding countries of the international organization."
    Al-Hassan reviewed the future plan for the activities of the International Mission for Assistance to Iraq (UNAMI), stressing "the United Nations' readiness to support Iraq in various development, educational and humanitarian fields in a way that strengthens the relationship and establishes the foundations of constructive cooperation between Iraq and the international organization."
