The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and Head of the UNAMI Mission, Mohammed Al-Hassan, said that Iraq is a pivotal country in the region and has regained its regional and international status. While praising the government's efforts to consolidate stability and advance infrastructure, he stressed its position calling for a ceasefire in the region and avoiding the risk of being dragged into further escalation.

Al-Hassan said in a special statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The relationship is deep-rooted between the United Nations and Iraq, as Iraq is one of the founding member states of the international organization, and the United Nations is not a guardian of Iraq, and the international presence here is based on the request of its government, and we work to serve this country in various fields."

He added, "Iraq is a pivotal country in the region and has regained its leading position in the regional and international arenas, and it is also a promising country facing a bright future thanks to the tireless work of the government and its tireless efforts to consolidate the security and political stability achieved and to advance the infrastructure and complete development projects."

He continued, "The latest examples of this are what we witnessed last week in the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, which took place peacefully and smoothly, and what we witness daily in terms of reconstruction and development movement in Baghdad and various other governorates is a source of confidence in the development path."

He pointed out that "there are important opportunities that must be seized despite some of the challenges facing Iraq, which requires concerted efforts and constructive cooperation. We wish this country abundant goodness, and we are confident that thanks to the strong partnership between the United Nations and Iraq, the desired integration will be achieved in the interest of the country and its people."

Regarding the current events in the region, Al-Hassan said, "We support the position of the Iraqi government and share its call for a ceasefire and calm in the Middle East region and to spare the country and the region the risk of being dragged into further escalation, which came in line with the call issued by the Secretary-General of the United Nations for an immediate ceasefire and restraint by all, so that these calls complement each other, at a time when there is an urgent need for concerted efforts in the region to achieve peace."
