Cairo-INA
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called on the international community to stand with Lebanon today, Monday.
The official spokesman for the Secretary-General, Jamal Rushdi, quoted Aboul Gheit as saying in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "We express the solidarity of the Arab League with Lebanon and the Lebanese people in the difficult circumstances the country is going through," calling on "the international community to stand by the Lebanese in the face of the Zionist attacks and their repercussions, especially those targeting civilian areas."
He added, "We are following with great concern the development of the situation in Lebanon," noting that "we believe in the ability of the Lebanese to maintain civil peace and stay away from any sectarian quarrel or conflict."
Aboul Gheit condemned "the series of continuous Zionist attacks on Lebanon, which have killed hundreds and left about a million displaced," stressing that "violating the country's sovereignty in this manner may lead to an expansion of the conflict."
He pointed out that "the diplomatic solution is still possible according to Resolution 1701, to which the Lebanese government has declared its commitment," stressing that "the Lebanese people have suffered a lot in the past years, and that today more than ever they need to stand by their side and support them to overcome this dangerous stage."
