Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani chaired Today, Thursday a meeting of the Higher Committee for Monitoring the Implementation of Tax Reform today to review the progress of the committee's work.

In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency ( INA ) the meeting focused on the achievements in line with the packages of decisions issued by the Council of Ministers and the steps undertaken by the Higher Committee for Monitoring the Implementation of Tax Reform. Notably, it was highlighted that tax revenues have increased by 22% in the current year up to early August compared to the same period last year, following a series of reform measures taken by the government that have contributed to sustained growth.

The Prime Minister stressed that the economic reforms pursued by the government as part of its program have demonstrated the strategic importance of tax reform. He emphasized that tax reform is a crucial part of a comprehensive developmental vision for the non-oil economy and the management of public funds and resources. He pointed out that it is a mistake to view tax reform merely as a fallback option during periods of oil price fluctuations or when oil revenues decline.

The meeting also discussed the implementation of measures to expand the tax base and include economic activities through a self-assessment approach, with exemptions approved by the Council of Ministers. Additionally, the meeting addressed steps to resolve taxpayer issues and the tax treatment of private banks.
