Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani announced the launch of a series of projects aimed at developing Al-Adhamiyah in various fields and sectors during his visit this Saturday morning.
The Prime Minister's Media Office stated, in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA),"The projects include two major initiatives to alleviate traffic congestion, the first involves constructing a new bridge linking Al-Kadhimiyah and Al-Adhamiyah, and the second focuses on connecting Mohammed Al-Qasim overpass with Al-Mashatel Street, Antar Square and Al-Dallal Square."
Regarding municipal services, Prime Minister Al-Sudani directed a comprehensive cleaning and rehabilitation campaign for the streets, alleys, and parks of Al-Adhamiyah. He also ordered the development and renovation of residential neighborhoods 308 and 310, the completion of development for eight main streets, the creation of gateways befitting Al-Adhamiyah’s significance, and the enhancement of the Tigris riverbanks for 1650 meters (Al-Masnaiya Corniche, Al-Adhamiyah/Al-Kisra Corniche). Additionally, land has been allocated for investment opportunities to build modern hotels within the city.
In the electricity sector, the launch of a project to install a 33/11 kV substation and box-type substations, along with the creation of required feeders to reduce electricity supply shortage, was announced.
In the education sector, land plots have been allocated for constructing 21 new schools, with their construction to follow in sequence, and the rehabilitation and rebuilding of 47 schools.
For the healthcare sector, Prime Minister Al-Sudani announced a project to renovate and build 10 health centers, the rehabilitation of the old Al-Nauman Hospital, and the resumption of work halted since 2014.
The Prime Minister also launched the project to rehabilitate the Mosque of Imam Abu Hanifa and the expansion of Al-Hanafi Shrine, adding attached service facilities, and constructing a multi-story parking garage for visitors.
Additional approved projects include the rehabilitation of the youth center, resolving Al-Kashafa Stadium issue, refurbishing the Al-Taliaa Theater, upgrading the elderly care home, implementing a river taxi service, and dredging and improving the Tigris riverbanks.
During a meeting with officials from the service and sectoral entities, Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized that this visit is part of a broader service improvement initiative in Baghdad and other provinces. He highlighted that Al-Adhamiyah, with its historical, religious, cultural, and commercial significance, is one of the main cities in Baghdad.
He noted the government's focus on heritage and archaeological areas through a series of projects and acknowledged that, like other areas of Baghdad, Al-Adhamiyah has experienced population growth, putting pressure on services, particularly in education, healthcare, and municipal services.
Given its central location, Al-Adhamiyah has become a part of the government’s plan to alleviate traffic congestion and diversify transportation routes, which is crucial for easing the movement in this city, an important access point to Al-Kadhimiyah, a holy city. This increased the service burden, leading to the opening of the "Freedom Bridge" (Alhuria Bridge) linking Al-Adhamiyah and Al-Kadhimiyah from Al-Karayat area, and the Mohammed Al-Qasim overpass to facilitate traffic flow.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani directed the formation of a committee headed by Prime Minister's Chief of Staff, with the membership of representatives from relevant departments, to follow up on the implementation of the projects listed in the Al-Adhamiyah development campaign.
