Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani met with Younis Mahmoud, the Second Vice President of the Iraqi Football Association, on Thursday. During the meeting, Al-Sudani emphasized that elevating Iraq's sports standing is the highest priority, pledging unwavering support for all efforts aimed at achieving champion status.
In a post on (X) followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Younis Mahmoud expressed gratitude on behalf of the football community and sports enthusiasts to Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani for his steadfast support for the national teams. Mahmoud stated, "I had the honor of meeting Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani and conveyed, on behalf of the football family and our sports fans, our thanks for his continuous support."
He added, "In the Prime Minister, I found a sports-minded individual committed to developing national sports across various domains and realizing Iraq's dream of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and repeating the achievement of the Athens 2004 Olympics." Mahmoud also affirmed that the Prime Minister expressed a strong desire to continue the support until our teams reclaim top positions in the continent and participate in global competitions.
Mahmoud continued, stating, "I assured Al-Sudani that under his leadership, we are experiencing the best relationships among sports institutions, with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Olympic Committee, and the Football Association standing united to achieve the goals of the state, the public, and the media by continuing to secure accomplishments."
He emphasized that "the Prime Minister promised to maintain and increase support for all national teams, recognizing the significant role football and sports play in Iraq." Mahmoud stressed that "Al-Sudani supports everyone in their quest to reach championship platforms and secure victories, with Iraq being the foremost priority and ultimate goal."
