The Interior Ministry announced on Sunday the arrest of the most dangerous drug trafficking and smuggling network in the south of the country.
The ministry stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "under the personal supervision of Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, the General Directorate of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Affairs in the Ministry of Interior, under the follow-up of the Director-General of the Directorate, in coordination and participation with the Falcons Intelligence Cell, and the Border Intelligence Directorate, carried out a qualitative pre-emptive operation in southern Iraq, which resulted in the seizure of the most important network for drug trade and smuggling, consisting of (5) defendants (2) of whom are foreigners, and 3 defendants with Iraqi nationality, after they were monitored and set up tight ambushes by judicial decisions."
"They were caught in possession of (34) kilograms of the narcotic substance (Opium) while trying to bring it into the country," it added that "they were placed in detention under a judicial decision in accordance with the provisions of Article (27) drugs, International drug trade."
"The rest of the details of the case will be announced once the stages of the fundamentalist investigations are completed," it said.
