The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, welcomed the statements of the Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine-Plasschaert, in a speech before the United Nations Security Council, noting that they give hope.
Al-Sadr stated in a tweet, which was followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "new international statements regarding the Iraqi elections give hope and good international recommendations, and we advise to follow and to avoid political quarrels, violence and destabilization of security."
He added: "It is a new opportunity for those who reject the election results to review themselves and submit to the results, not only for political benefits, but for the people who aspire to a (national majority government) that will provide Iraq and the Iraqis with security, sovereignty, stability, reconstruction and services that our proud and patient people aspire for."
Mr. Al-Sadr added that "one of the most important statements issued by the UN envoy is that there is no evidence of electoral fraud, in addition to what was stated in her words, stressing the absence of procrastination and delay in announcing the results."
He went on to say, "Therefore, the Federal Court must work hard and impartially on this and deal with appeals professionally and do not succumb to political pressures, as we hope for it. The people are looking forward to it impatiently to reach safety and a comfortable life."
