Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri confirmed that the transit capacity transfer project, which was signed today, Tuesday, between IQ Internet Services Company, the official partner of the Ministry, and the international company Gulf Bridge (GBI), adopted Dark Fiber technology in the submarine cable project to transfer international transit capacities across Iraq for the first time by adopting the direct connection service between two sites.
Al-Yasiri stressed in her speech after the signing ceremony, which was attended by the correspondent of the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the importance of the project, which adopted modern technology to transfer international data from Iraq to countries around the world. It is the most important event in the history of the ministry and was the result of efforts that lasted for many years.
Al-Yasiri pointed out that she adopted transit projects due to their importance, as Iraq is a short strategic corridor linking the north to the south and the east to the west, stressing that the doors are open to all international companies to pass international communications through Iraqi territory.
She said, "We were very supportive of the advancement of these important projects despite the challenges, and the fruits of the efforts were to increase the passing capacities in Iraq within a few months to 1600 terabytes by following flexible and reduced pricing policies and providing technical and legal solutions."
Al-Yasiri announced that she had granted many approvals to international and Arab companies such as TurkTelecom, Batelco, Ooredoo, STC, Omantel, Zajil, Emirates Telecommunications, Breeze Company, and others, some of which included laying submarine cables, equipping a second station in addition to the Al-Faw station, and establishing additional transit networks.
In turn, the General Counsel of iQ Group, Zeno Qader, said in his speech during the occasion, “We celebrate the signing of the first agreement to pass a capacity of up to one tera inside the territory of Iraq, through the transit line project, which was established by iQ Networks, one of the companies of the iQ Group of Companies. We, in the iQ Group of Companies, are proud of the services we provide in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, especially in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate.”
He added, "The Internet services provided by our company are the best in Iraq and the Middle East, and even surpass many countries in the world in terms of quality. They are also among the most cost-effective services."
He added, "This project is not just an ordinary achievement, but rather represents a major strategic step that places Iraq at the heart of the international networks map. Through it, Iraq becomes a pivotal center for passing capacities between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia and vice versa. This project is also important not only for economic aspects, but also includes security and stability dimensions, which enhances Iraq's position on the international scene."
