The Office of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi announced on Wednesday, that it foiled an attempt of electoral fraud, while noting that a number of suspects had been arrested.

"Security services, under the direct supervision of the Iraqi judiciary, succeeded in implementing a proactive process that foiled an attempt of electoral fraud by putting pressure on a number of Electoral Commission employees, with the aim of confusing politics and creating chaos," stated the Prime Minister's Office in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The statement included, "After careful technical investigations by the concerned bodies, and under the direct supervision of the judiciary, the security services were able to arrest a number of suspects in a group that tried the electoral fraud, by using their relations with employees of the Electoral Commission,"

"This came with the aim of provoking information and creating political chaos in Iraq, via a network of electronic communication sites, including a site called “Lady of Green”, where those were in charge of it tried by various means to suggest that it is linked to the office of the Prime Minister, its employees, or the Prime Minister's advisors," according to the statement.

The statement noted, "Some media outlets; particularly those affiliated with some political powers; echoed these false slanders, with no vetting, in a manner that lacks professionalism and fairness. It is considered a blatant violation of law and professional principles.  Justice found its way to prove the invalidity of these lies and the falseness of promoters. Some of them even got involved in electronic gangs,"

After deepening the investigations and seizing criminal assets, for example, the electoral cards by one of the accused, and the arrest of a number of those in charge of this group including those who helped them, the analysis of computers and related communications, an intertwined network of those responsible for the case was reached, whether with funding, encouragement or assistance, including current and former political and parliamentary figures, as well as some employees of the Electoral Commission, “in order to harm the relations between the authorities on the one hand, or the balanced relationship of the Prime Minister’s office with all political forces,” the statement included, “the investigation on this issue and other issues as well as all those responsible are ongoing, and those involved will be brought to justice,"

"The government will continue to implement its commitments to secure fair elections, provide all its requirements and maintain its neutral responsibility in terms of competition in the electoral process and support it,” affirmed the Prime Minister's office.

PM Office pointed out that, “Law will be imposed and bring to the judiciary those frauds who is trying to offend this role, or confuse others and falsify facts, or accuse the Prime Minister’s office unfairly and slanderously, or try to derail the elections, including combating the phenomenon of organized electronic groups, which cause confusion, spread fraud, and threaten public stability,”
