The Tourism and Antiquities Authority at the Ministry of Culture announced on Monday, its plan to revive archaeological and heritage sites, while indicating the formation of a committee from the General Secretariat of the Cabinet to activate tourism in Dhi Qar province.
The Director General of the Tourism Facilities Department and spokesman for the Tourism and Antiquities Authority, Abdul Qadir Al-Jumaili, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): there are number of proposals and ideas to advance the Iraqi archaeological and heritage reality, noting that many tourist sites have been neglected in the past period due to security and political conditions and the war against ISIS.
the plan includes working to establish a permanent annual festival in the city of Nasiriyah, especially since it is a civilized city filled cultural treasures, noting that Pope Francis' visit to the city was considered a message of reassurance to tourists, Al-Jumaili added.
In a related issue, Al-Jumaili pointed out that the work will also include preparing the archaeological city of Babylon in cooperation with the Antiquities Authority through making tourist gatherings and festivals, in addition to rehabilitate Babylon Tourist Hotel to receive tourists during the coming period after the end of the Corona crisis.
Al-Jumaili also stressed that number of European and Arab countries have a desire to visit Iraq and go to archaeological and heritage sites, affirming that they have addressed the Crisis Cell to allow the return of tourists and stimulate economic activity.
