Indian authorities have evacuated nearly a million people to emergency camps in recent days, while Monday's death toll from monsoon floods rose to at least 184.
The southern state of Kerala, a tourist destination because of its picturesque beaches, resorts and lakes, has been hardest hit by monsoon rains that last week forced authorities to close Kochi International Airport for three days. At least 76 people have been killed, 58 missing and 32 injured, Pramod Kumar, a spokesman for Kerala police, told AFP.
Some 288,000 people have been relocated from the hardest-hit areas of the state, particularly Ayanad, Malappuram and Kozhikode, to relief camps. At least 42 people have died in the neighboring state of Karnataka, which has seen one of its worst floods in recent years.
