Javier Tebas, President of the Spanish LaLiga, affirmed that several countries in the region are keen to implement the LaLiga project in a manner similar to Iraq. He emphasized that LaLiga is working to position Iraqi sports among the best in the Gulf and highlighted that LaLiga Iraq serves as the perfect model to elevate Iraqi football to the top.
Tebas, during an interview with the Iraqi News Agency (INA) at “Iraq Without Piracy” summit, expressed the importance of implementing proper legislation and judicial solutions to tackle the technological challenges that contribute to piracy.
He also shared the significant strides LaLiga has made over the past year in fighting piracy, noting, “We are making substantial progress, and I believe we are close to ending piracy. There is more work to be done to encourage major technology companies like Google to stop cooperating with piracy groups.”
On the LaLiga project in Iraq, Tebas explained that while significant progress has been made, improving the Iraqi Professional Stars League in areas like sports management and infrastructure is essential. He emphasized that building a professional football system correctly is a long-term process, likely taking years to fully establish.
Tebas also pointed out that other countries in the region are interested in replicating Iraq’s experience. However, he reiterated that Iraq remains the focus, as its project holds the greatest potential for success.
When asked about the criticism of refereeing in LaLiga, Tebas responded, “I believe the debate has been somewhat exaggerated. In my opinion, the reason for this is that it was Real Madrid that was affected. Mistakes have occurred and can be contested, but that doesn’t mean there’s a general problem with refereeing. Of course, refereeing should be improved. LaLiga, in collaboration with the Spanish Football Federation, has started taking steps to improve refereeing. Refereeing, like anything else, must be worked on to become perfected.”
