The Directorate General of Intelligence and Security (DGIS) at the Ministry of Defence announced on Sunday the arrest of two individuals involved in the cultivation of narcotic plants in Dhi Qar.
“Under the direction and supervision of Defence Minister Thabet al-Abbasi, and through the continued execution of precision operations by the General Directorate of Intelligence and Security detachments, and following high-level intelligence efforts and obtaining the necessary judicial approvals, our units successfully detained two drug traffickers cultivating Datura plants in agricultural areas of the province,” stated the DGIS in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The operation led to the seizure of 10 kilograms of Datura plants, which were prepared for distribution. The arrest followed an exchange of fire, during which the suspects were apprehended on-site. During questioning, the suspects admitted to cultivating the plants on a 300-square-meter farm.
The statement added, “The Intelligence Directorate's units discovered the farm and subsequently transferred the suspects to the competent authorities under Article 28 of the Narcotics Act.”
