The General Traffic Directorate announced a significant decline in road accidents on Tuesday, attributing the decrease to advancements in traffic technology and enhanced safety systems across the nation.
In a press conference attended by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), The Director General of The General Traffic Directorate Major General Raad Mahdi Abdul Sahib Al-Ubaidi reported the issuance of 939,000 new driving licenses and 2.13 million vehicle registrations this year, alongside steady production of license plates.
He highlighted swift implementation of new internal road signs and smart traffic signals as part of the Directorate’s efforts.
Al-Ubaidi noted that speed-monitoring devices have been installed from border areas to city centers, with provincial councils equipped to curb accidents, resulting in a substantial reduction. The Directorate has also established a new division for external roads and signed agreements with international companies to supply radar-equipped vehicles, with a second phase of deployments underway.
“Electronic payment systems have been introduced to reduce corruption, and services are now accessible in any province. Office hours have been extended and the Ur platform has been activated to allow citizens to check fines,” He added.
Al-Ubaidi also mentioned plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to reinstate school traffic signs and enhance road safety awareness for students.
