The Supreme Judicial Council-SJC announced on Sunday that Babil Criminal Court sentenced a drug dealer to life imprisonment, while Diwaniyah Criminal Court issued five-year sentences to individuals convicted of antiquities trading.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), SJC noted that “Babil Criminal Court sentenced a drug dealer to life imprisonment for possessing large quantities of narcotic pills intended for sale.”
The statement added that “the defendant was found in possession of 56,000 ‘Zero-One’ pills.”
It further mentioned that “the court issued the life sentence and ordered the confiscation of the vehicle used, in accordance with Article 28, Paragraph 1, of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017.”
SJC also confirmed that “Diwaniyah Criminal Court sentenced three individuals to five years in prison for antiquities trafficking.”
It noted that “the convicted individuals were found with seven items, one of which was an authentic artifact, while the other six were counterfeit.”
The sentences were handed down under Article 44 of the Antiquities and Heritage Law No. 55 of 2002, referencing Articles 47, 48, and 49 of the Penal Code.
