The Central Criminal Court sentences five defendants to life imprisonment for drug trafficking and possession

    The Central Criminal Court sentenced on Sunday, five defendants to life imprisonment for possessing and transporting narcotics for the purpose of trafficking them.
     
    The Supreme Judicial Council-SJC stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA that “the court issued life imprisonment verdicts against five defendants involved in the possession and transportation of illicit narcotics for the purpose of distribution.”
     
    The statement detailed that “one of the convicted individuals was apprehended in Abu Dshir district, with a significant quantity of drugs in his possession. Another was detained while operating auto-rickshaw, during which Captagon pills were found. The third convict was ensnared in an ambush while driving, and 2 kilograms of narcotics were confiscated from his vehicle.”
     
    “Further investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects in Basra Governorate as the two accomplices were arrested in Safwan District, with authorities seizing 18 kilograms of Captagon pills in their possession,” the statement confirmed.
     
    The court’s rulings were issued under Article 28, Section 1 of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017, underscoring the judiciary’s unwavering commitment to combating drug-related crimes in Iraq.
