The National Investment Commission-NIC announced on Tuesday, the approval of a license for the Sustainable Baghdad City, marking the first significant environmental initiative of its kind in the Middle East. NIC also unveiled plans to introduce the "Blue Ammonia" project, an alternative energy source to oil.
Haidar Makki, Chairman of The National Investment Commission, stated to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "NIC issued an investment license, the first of its kind in Iraq, on 3/28/2024 for the Green Sustainable City of Baghdad, which is the first huge environmental project in the Middle East.
Makki further noted that "NIC has formally required investors to enhance green spaces and increase forestation in line with designs approved by relevant sectoral authorities."
Additionally, Makki disclosed that "NIC plans to launch the 'Blue Ammonia' project, which will act as an oil substitute. This project is expected to support industrial operations and deliver significant economic benefits, alongside other strategic initiatives that will be announced upon finalization."
