The Media Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement obtained by the Iraqi News Agency INA that Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani received a Sumerian artifact dating back to 2900-3000 BCE, which was handed over by representatives from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in a ceremony held at his residence in Washington D.C. The event was attended by the Iraqi Ambassador to the United States and numerous media outlets.
The statement read that “During the ceremony, Prime Minister Al-Sudani expressed his gratitude to the museum's administration for their efforts in delivering this historical artifact and for the procedures facilitating its transfer to the Iraqi Embassy. He emphasized that such initiatives would strengthen the ties between Iraq and the United States.”
It further said that “Prime Minister Al-Sudani noted that Iraqi artifacts represent the nation's identity, history, and civilization. He affirmed that the government continues its efforts to recover all artifacts associated with Mesopotamian civilizations, especially after the country suffered from waves of theft and neglect, resulting in the loss of many archaeological items that chronicle Iraq’s contributions to human civilization.”
“The Prime Minister stressed that it is an obligation of the government and the state to collaborate with friendly nations and all international and cultural institutions to return our artifacts to their original homeland,” the statement added.
