Nechirvan Barzani, the Kurdistan Region President, stated on Thursday that the genocide against the Feyli Kurds is a dark chapter in the nation's history that has brought hardships.

"Today marks the painful 44th anniversary of the genocide of thousands of Feyli Kurds who, through a brutal campaign committed against them by the Iraqi regime at the time, were killed, arrested, displaced, disappeared, deprived from citizenship, and had their money and property confiscated just because they were Kurds who supported the Kurdistan revolution," said Barzani in a statement released on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the genocide of the Feyli Kurds and obtained by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

He declared, "The crimes against the people of Kurdistan and the genocide of the Feyli Kurds are a dark history and a bitter past full of mistakes in Iraq that brought woes and instability to the country."

He emphasized "the need for that past to become a lesson and an example for all of us, in order to achieve a better future based on harmony, partnership and acceptance of the other in Iraq."
