The Ministry of Electricity confirmed, today, Friday, that the goal of extending the agreement to supply gas from Iran is to ensure its continued flow at peak summer loads.

Ministry spokesman Ahmed Musa told Iraqi News, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “Two days ago, the Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, signed a contract during his visit to Iran in which he agreed to supply 50 cubic meters of gas daily for 5 years.”.

He stated, "Despite the existence of government projects to invest in gas, the signing is necessary to ensure the continuity of the gas flow until self-sufficiency is achieved, and such an agreement cannot be disrupted or delayed, especially since Iraq is approaching summer, when loads peak and the need for stations operating with gas needs to be provided.".

He stressed that "the agreement included a clause in which the Iranian side affirmed its commitment to the stability of the supply of the quantities that Iraq needs at peak loads.".

He pointed out that "completing gas investment projects requires time periods and ceilings that the Ministry of Oil says require between 3-5 years. There are contracts to invest associated gas in generation and others to raise the system's capabilities, and all of these require time to be completed.".
