Media Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement obtained by the Iraqi News Agency INA that “Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani welcomed the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, this Monday morning.”
The statement read “Prime Minister Al-Sudani highlighted Iraq's early initiative to join the IAEA, adhere to its treaties, and its commitment to developing nuclear reactors for peaceful purposes. He affirmed Iraq’s belief that nuclear energy should be a source of prosperity, not a means for developing destructive weapons. He noted that Iraq had submitted the requirements for accession to the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management last year, showing Iraq’s intent to reengage in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy.”
It further noted that “The Prime Minister expressed Iraq’s desire to reclaim its rightful place in the international community, actively participating in peaceful nuclear activities. He looked forward to the IAEA's support in developing programs and projects related to peaceful nuclear applications.”
On his part, Mr. Grossi extended, according to the statement, an invitation to Prime Minister Al-Sudani to attend the upcoming Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels this March, appreciating Iraq’s cooperation with the IAEA and acknowledging Iraq as a key partner. He committed to collaborating with Iraq on its peaceful programs, including energy, soil desalination, medical treatment, and other peaceful applications. He expressed eagerness for the upcoming visit of the Iraqi delegation to the IAEA headquarters to establish a roadmap for Iraq’s development, infrastructure building, and acquisition of peaceful nuclear technology.
