The Ministry of Electricity confirmed today, Tuesday, that the agreement with Iran to swap Iranian gas for Iraqi crude oil will improve the electricity situation, and while it indicated that the quantities will gradually increase, it confirmed that its tripartite budget plan aims to diversify energy sources.

The ministry's spokesman, Ahmed Musa, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "Today's agreement with the Iranian side on exchanging the supplied gas for crude oil came after continuous follow-up by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, and represents a strategic step that will advance the reality of the electricity system because it will end the problem of gas scarcity."
He added, "The agreement secures gas dues to the Iranian side in return for exchanging it also for crude oil, to end this chronic problem that is repeated every season during high summer loads."
"The agreement will create a radical solution to the problem, coinciding with the continuation of the current projects for gas investment, which the Prime Minister referred to in his speech, and which are being followed up by him." Musa said.
He stressed that "gas releases will rise according to the agreement gradually to return to it previous quantities, and the ministry's plan, according to the tripartite budget, will find solutions to the electricity crisis, because it will depend on diversifying energy sources, which will include installing combined cycles and establishing thermal stations, as well as starting to establish solar energy stations, in addition to completing electrical linkage projects."
