The President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faeq Zaidan, directed on Thursday that legal measures be taken against the person who burned the Holly Qur’an.
The Supreme Judicial Council said, in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the head of the council, Faeq Zaidan, directed that legal measures be taken against the person who burned the Holy Qur'an, in accordance with the provisions of Article 14 of the Iraqi Penal Code in force."
It added, "Zaidan instructed the Public Prosecution Office, in coordination with the First Karkh Investigation Court, to complete legal procedures to request the extradition of this person and to prosecute him according to the law."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously expressed its condemnation of the Swedish authorities allowing an extremist to burn a copy of the Holy Qur’an, stressing that “these events would inflame the feelings of Muslims around the world and constitute a serious provocation for them,” while calling on “the international community to assume its responsibilities to stop such incidents, unacceptable acts, rejecting all forms of hatred and extremism, and holding theb perpetrators accountable.
While the government spokesman, Basem Al-Awadi, affirmed that "the Iraqi government expresses its strong condemnation and denunciation of what some mentally ill people have done, in terms of burning copies of the Holy Qur'an, repeatedly by some people with sick and extremist minds and souls, in a public manner full of hatred and defiance of all virtuous and human values that It urges respect for religions and holy books.
He added, "The government believes that this heinous act that hurt the feelings of millions of Muslims and even offended the Western peoples themselves, who have long boasted of embracing diversity, respecting the beliefs of others, protecting religions and the rights of their adherents," pointing out that "these actions reflect a hateful aggressive spirit that is not related to freedom."
He explained, "These irresponsible actions are rejected by lofty human values and rejected by the principles of respect for diversity and the beliefs of others, which have always been defended by the Holy Qur'an, and all religions lived in the shadow of the civilization that emanated from its brightest days, and allowing these ignorant extremists to provoke believers and commit their foolishness without deterrence will drag us again to the quagmire of terrorism and extremism from which the world is still groaning, and without a doubt the parties that stand behind these people or that allow them and tempt them to continue their foolishness will bear all the negative consequences that ensue, directly or indirectly,” calling on “the concerned governments to take the initiative and deter this handful of extremists from continuing their misdeeds and pushing everyone towards results that no one wants.”
