Government spokesperson Basim Al-Awadi on Monday denied any involvement by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani in determining the dates for Eid al-Fitr, expressing regret that some politicians are attempting to drag religious institutions into power struggles
. In response to a question from the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Awadi stated, “Claims that the government or the prime minister played a role in confirming the sighting of the crescent moon and setting the date for Eid al-Fitr are entirely baseless and false
.” He emphasized that “the prime minister believes in granting religious institutions their rightful authority in such matters and distances himself from these issues, as they fall within the purview of religious scholars, clerics, and legitimate institutions. These entities alone are responsible for determining religious dates and rulings
.” Al-Awadi added that Al-Sudani remains committed to respecting all beliefs within Iraq’s diverse religious landscape
