President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid decided on Sunday to return Iraqi artifacts borrowed by Britain.
A statement by the Presidency of the Republic received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "the ceremony of receiving (6000) artifacts from Britain, has been conducted at the Iraqi embassy building in London, with the follow-up and supervision of President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid," noting that "these pieces borrowed by Britain from Iraq for the purposes of study since 1923."
it added, "This came on the sidelines of the visit of the President of the Republic to the United Kingdom to attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III," pointing out, "The President of the Republic decided to return the ancient artifacts to Baghdad during his return after the conclusion of his current visit to Britain, and hand them over to the Iraqi Museum."
The ceremony of handover of Iraqi artifacts was attended by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani alongside the Iraqi Ambassador to London, Mohammed Jaafar Al-Sadr, the Director-General of British Museums and Chair of London Museum and several Journalists, relevant experts and archaeologists from Iraq and Britain.
