At least five people were injured and adjacent buildings were evacuated. A fire is preventing rescue teams from searching for possible victims.
An apartment building collapsed in an apparent explosion Sunday in the French Mediterranean city of Marseille, injuring five people, with authorities warning there are likely to be fatalities as firefighters battled a blaze. The collapse of the building in the port city in southern France occurred around 12:40 am, damaging parts of the two surrounding buildings, Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan told reporters.

"We have to be prepared to have victims in this terrible tragedy," Payan told journalists at the scene in the central La Plaine district, where over 100 firefighters were still getting the blaze under control and the smell of smoke hung in the air. The fire "is extremely difficult to control," said Payan. "The firefighters are judging minute by minute how best to put out this fire because there are potentially people alive inside."
