The Governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani, announced that an Iraqi record for the number of public attendance was recorded during the Gulf Championship 25, while confirming Iraq’s endeavor to submit a request to host the Asian Championship in Iraq during the year 2027.
Al-Eidani said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “ FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who attended the Gulf 25 opening ceremony, praised the Iraqi fans and said that he deserves to lift the ban and all sanctions on Iraqi stadiums.
He added, "Iraq has become safe and deserves a lot, and this is proven by the current championship, which recorded a high success rate, and we must strive to host the Asian Championship in Iraq," noting that "we bet on the Iraqi public and succeeded in that.".
The governor continued, "Iraq broke a record in public attendance during the Gulf Championship in its 25th edition, compared to all previous editions in other Gulf countries.".
He pointed out that "Saudi Arabia is the only country to host the Asian Championship in 2027, and there may be a partnership between Iraq and Saudi Arabia to host this tournament, and Iraq may host it alone.".
The Organizing Committee for the Gulf 25 announced earlier that more than 500,000 fans attended the first round matches of the tournament, which is the highest record in the Gulf Cup since its inception.
