On Thursday, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih met with the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Iraq, Cui Wei. The meeting was held at-al Salam Palace in Baghdad.
"The Chinese ambassador first conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinping to President Salih. He also delivered a written message to the Iraqi President from China," The media office of the President of the Republic stated, in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
President Salih reciprocated, asking Cui Wei to convey his greetings to the Chinese President in turn.
It is vital to boost Iraq- China friendships and work together to promote these ties at every level, in the way that most benefits the two nations' citizens, President Xi Jinping said on the message.
President Salih expressed his heartfelt condolences to His Excellency President Xi Jinping, the people of China, and the families of those who lost their loved ones as a result of the tragic event after an earthquake hit China's southwestern Sichuan province, and caused several deaths, wounded people, and missing persons.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of victims and their loved ones during this difficult time, the Iraqi President said, while wishing a speedy recovery for those who were wounded in the tragedy.
President Salih and Cui Wei discussed Iraqi- the Chinese long-standing historical bilateral relationship, including economic, trade, industrial, and cultural cooperation, in the ways that would most serve the two nations' ties.
Wei reiterated China's commitment to a secure, stable and unified Iraq, including as it supports dialogue to settle differences between the rival political groups.
Furthermore, he emphasized China’s eagerness to further develop cooperation with Iraq across all sectors.
