Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced on Monday, its preparations for a strategy to reduce the poverty rate to 2024-2028, indicating that it will launch one of the largest economic and social surveys in Iraq.

"The Ministry is currently preparing to cooperate with the Ministries of Labor, Social Affairs and Commerce, to prepare the third poverty reduction strategy in Iraq during the next five years from 2024 to 2028," said the Ministry spokesman Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi to the Iraqi News Agency – INA.

"This plan aims to improve the standard of living for the poor in general and focuses on two phases."

According to Al-Hindawi, the first phase included reconsidering and evaluating the social protection network so as to ensure that it reaches the beneficiaries and re-examining the poverty line in order to ensure that support reaches poor families.

The second phase was set to be related to reforming the food ration card system and working with the Ministry of Commerce in order to allocate a program for poor families, with a review of those covered, “because many of them are well off and poor families are a priority.”

He went on, saying that "the measures on the issue of income and improving the standard of living will be via other phases that the new strategy focuses on, which are linked to education, health and housing for the poor groups in Iraqi society.”

Al-Hindawi highlighted that "the Ministry of Planning is preparing to launch one of the largest economic and social surveys in Iraq,” as this survey will soon be implemented, which will give the Ministry important indicators about the level of poverty, the poverty line and the standard of living of the poor.

"The outcomes of this survey and its indicators will be important inputs to the poverty strategy that is currently being prepared," he included.
