Ministry of Water Resources announced on Monday, that the agricultural sector consumes about 85% of the waters of Tigris and Euphrates, while noting that Syria has released large quantities of its share to Iraq.

A meeting was set to be held with a Turkish delegation in Baghdad during May to proceed on the issue of water, "but the delegation did not attend without knowing the reasons. We asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to know the reasons for the delegation's non-attendance," said the Director-General of the National Center for Water Resources Management in the ministry, Hatem Hamid, in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

He added, "Solutions to confront the water crisis include two cases: the first is abroad, which is concerned with discussing with neighboring countries to agree on Iraq's water share, and the other track is internal, which is to oblige all sectoral ministries that use water, especially agriculture, to rationalize consumption for the purpose of cultivating larger areas and increasing productivity, with the use of modern technologies in plant watering operations."

"The agricultural sector consumes 80-85% of the absolute water in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers," he added, noting that "Syria has released large amounts of its water quota to Iraq."

Regarding the water revenues that reach Iraq, Hamid said that "the water revenues that we receive in the Tigris and Euphrates until the beginning of this month are 35% of the general average. As what we receive from Iran in Diyala River is 25%, and from Turkey 35%."
