The Salah al-Din Governorate Antiquities directorate announced Thursday the discovery of antiquities dating back to the Abbasid era in Samarra district, while it sent a request to the Ministry of Construction.

The director of the province's antiquities, Saad Jassim al-Khazraji, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "traces, an archaeological wall, and stucco decorations dating back to the Abbasid period were found in the Al-Mu'tasim neighborhood in the center of Samarra," noting that "the archaeological discoveries were discovered after work on the sewage project."

"We have asked the Ministry of Reconstruction and the head of the administrative unit of the Samarra Subprefecture and the company implementing the project to stop work on the project because of the presence of new archaeological discoveries," al-Khazraji said.
