The Federal Court discuss with Romanowski KRG Parliament elections

The President of the Federal Supreme Court, Judge Jassim Muhammad Abboud, discussed with the Ambassador of the United States of America in Baghdad, Elena Romanowski, today, Monday, the elections for the Kurdistan Regional Parliament.

A statement from the Federal Court received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) said: “The President of the Federal Supreme Court, Judge Jassim Muhammad Abboud, received the Ambassador of the United States of America in Baghdad, Elena Romanowski, at the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court in Baghdad.”

The statement added, "The President of the Federal Supreme Court welcomed the Ambassador of the United States of America in Baghdad and her accompanying delegation. During the meeting, the keenness of the Federal Supreme Court to establish bilateral relations with the international constitutional courts was emphasized to exchange legal expertise in the field of constitutional judiciary to develop it and benefit from the accumulated experiences of the constitutional courts in a way that contributes to the correct democratic construction and the preservation of public and private rights and freedoms.".

During the meeting, the progress of relations between Iraq and the United States of America was reviewed and the support provided to strengthen relations and provide cooperation in various fields, stressing the importance of strengthening them for the sake of a safe and prosperous Iraq, building constitutional institutions correctly, preserving the Iraqi constitution and consolidating the principles through which a democratic, representative, parliamentary system can be built, and that the Constitution is the guarantor of the unity of Iraq, and the emphasis on the correct application of the Constitution with regard to the financial and administrative powers of the governorates not organized in a region, in accordance with what is stated in Article (122 / Second) of the Constitution and what is stated in Article (121 / First). ) which granted the regional authorities the right to exercise legislative, executive and judicial powers in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution based on what was stated therein regarding the exclusive powers of the federal authorities.”.

The statement indicated, "The issue of the elections for the Parliament of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was discussed and the necessity of finding all the necessary solutions to hold them in a way that leads to holding fair elections and ensuring effective participation in them by everyone.".

The statement continued, "The American ambassador made clear that her country seeks to build strong relations with the Iraqi side at various levels, especially in the field of constitutional judiciary, praising the independence of the Iraqi judiciary and the role of the Federal Supreme Court in consolidating constitutional and democratic principles to ensure the building of a parliamentary system based on the rule of law." .
