The President: The release of 9,000 inmates in detention despite the end of their sentence

    The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, confirmed today, Monday, the release of 9,000 inmates in detention despite the end of their sentences.

    A statement from the Presidency of the Republic, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that “President of the Republic Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid received at Baghdad Palace a number of political analysts.”.

    Rashid confirmed, according to the statement, that “the Presidency of the Republic is witnessing multiple meetings and dialogues, to reach solutions to various outstanding issues, most notably resolving the issue of choosing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and strengthening the relationship between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government,” noting “the need for political forces to focus on unifying visions regarding Including removing obstacles, whatever they may be, that prevent reaching logical and final solutions to many of the issues facing the country.”.

    The statement continued, “Rashid spoke about the activities of the Presidency of the Republic, especially in the field of submitting a number of draft laws, such as the draft law of the Supreme Water Council, the draft law amending the dissolved Revolutionary Command Council’s decision regarding real estate secretion, the draft law of the Supreme Authority for the Empowerment of Women, and the draft law amending the drug law.” And psychotropic substances, and the draft law on recovery of proceeds of corruption, to the House of Representatives for the purpose of approval because they are directly related to the needs of citizens.”.

    He pointed out that "the Presidency of the Republic received many letters from the families of detainees, confirming that they would not be released despite the end of their sentences. Based on the role of the Presidency of the Republic, it formed a committee that included representatives of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministries of Interior and Justice, the Supreme Judicial Council, and the National Security Advisory, and several meetings were held that resulted in the release of approximately 9,000 detainees.

    The President explained that "Iraq enjoys strong political and economic relations with neighboring countries and the world, and always seeks to strengthen its relations with everyone in a way that secures common interests and enhances security and stability."
    He pointed out "the importance of the role of political analysts and specialists in Iraqi affairs, and the extent of the national responsibility placed on their shoulders in presenting ideas and finding solutions to crises.".

    In turn, political analysts expressed their “appreciation for the positions of the President of the Republic and his continuous follow-up of citizens’ issues,” stressing “the importance of meeting with His Excellency to exchange opinions and ideas in a way that is in the public interest.”
