A powerful typhoon hit Japan and some of its eastern islands on Friday, with strong winds and torrential rains, leading to the suspension of some internal flights and trains.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon (Mindulle) was near one of the Izu islands off the southern coast of Tokyo, moving toward the northeast at a speed of about 35 kilometers (21 miles) per hour and carrying winds of up to 162 kilometers (100 miles) per hour.
"Some local train services in Chiba and other prefectures east of Tokyo have been temporarily suspended, and many flights and ferries connecting Hanida Airport with Tokyo and the outer islands have been canceled," she said.
"There have been no reports of damage or injuries so far, and he urged Izu residents to stay indoors and avoid approaching glass windows, until the typhoon passes," Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato told reporters.
The Meteorological Authority warned residents of the affected areas of the possibility of floods and mudslides.
