The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee confirmed today, Monday, the formation of a specialized parliamentary committee to follow up the contract to purchase the S-300 system with the Russian side.
Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Saad Maya, told the Iraqi News Agency: "Iraq has an integrated and coherent security system and it needs an air umbrella to sustain the momentum of the victories against terrorism and eliminate sleeping pockets," noting that "contracting with the Russian side will take place after the formation of the government".
Maya added that "Iraq has coordination with the Syrian side to combat terrorism, especially since Iraq has shared borders with Syria, which are still fighting Daesh terrorism," noting that "the Russian system will enhance Iraqi defense and offensive capabilities."
The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee had confirmed earlier that Iraq had started activating the contract to purchase the Russian S-300 air defense missile system about three months ago.
