Iraq plans to secure gas supplies through a floating platform from Qatar, Algeria, Indonesia, and Brazil, as part of efforts to stabilize the country’s power supply, a senior government official said on Tuesday.

Adel Karim, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani’s adviser on electricity affairs, told Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the government has taken several measures to ensure energy stability, including the import of gasoil from neighboring countries and the completion of the floating platform in Khor Al-Zubair.

“The platform will allow Iraq to import up to 400 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), generating between 1,500 and 2,000 megawatts of electricity,” Karim said.

Iraq is making progress in developing its gas fields and utilizing associated gas, with local production expected to ramp up between 2026 and 2029, reducing reliance on imports, he added.
The government has also awarded contracts for major power plant projects with a total capacity of 35 megawatts, which will help narrow the supply gap in the coming years.

Iraq faces two key challenges in meeting summer electricity demand, Karim said. The first is securing fuel for power plants, an issue the government is working to resolve. The second is rising consumption due to population growth.

“Efforts are ongoing to ensure the stability of the power grid across all provinces,” he said.
