The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) reported that the Iraqi Consulate in Istanbul was targeted by gunfire from unidentified assailants.
In a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), MOFA confirmed that “At approximately 9:00 PM on Friday, unknown individuals on a motorcycle opened fire on the Iraqi Consulate’s facade using a Kalashnikov rifle, discharging eight rounds before fleeing the scene.”
The statement added that “Immediately after the attack, the Iraqi Consul General and consulate representatives arrived at the site to assess the situation. Turkish security forces swiftly cordoned off the surrounding area and launched an investigation, collecting evidence in the presence of Iraqi diplomatic officials.”
MOFA affirmed its “ongoing coordination with Turkish authorities to determine the circumstances of the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.” It also commended “the swift response of Turkish authorities and the security measures undertaken.”
The ministry underscored the “importance of reinforcing security measures to protect diplomatic missions in line with international agreements.”
