The Presidency of the Republic on Monday called on the Parliament to vote on the Halabja province bill in honor of this precious city that presented its martyrs.

The presidency said in a speech during a moment of silence and mourning on the occasion of the anniversary of the bombing of Halabja with chemical weapons in the presence of President of the Republic Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “We recall today the memory of the Baath's crimes against the Iraqi people, including the crimes of extermination in Halabja, Anfal, mass graves and the killing of scientists and national symbols.”

The Presidency added that “all Iraqis reject injustice in all its forms and aspire to a free and dignified life,” explaining that “the attack on Halabja is one of the direct attacks, as it exceeded in its brutality what the Nazis did in Europe during the Second World War.”

“The people of Halabja were victims of reckless policies and its crime is one of the crimes against humanity,” The Presidency said, noting that ”Halabja is not a witness to death as the provinces of Iraq from the center and south rose up in 1991 and the mass graves were waiting for them.”

The Presidency urged “the international community to prevent the spread of internationally prohibited weapons of mass destruction and stop wars and conflicts,” calling for “serving the families of the victims and providing them with the necessary support.”

The Presidency stressed “the need to restore the affected cities,” calling on “the Parliament to vote on the Halabja province bill in honor of this precious city that offered its martyrs, and we urge the political forces to support this demand.”
