Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning Mohammed Ali Tamim said on Monday that the country has completed its first electronic census in four decades, a move he said will support sustainable development and ensure equitable resource distribution.
“At the first electronic census in nearly 40 years, we can now diagnose developmental gaps at the smallest administrative levels, guarantee fair resource allocation across provinces and provide an accurate demographic map of the country,” Tamim said at a press conference on the census results, attended by an INA correspondent.
Tamim added that the census provides comprehensive data on population composition, housing, economic activity, age distribution, marital status, maternal mortality, fertility, education and public services. “This data is vital to bridging developmental gaps across sectors,” he said.
He also credited strong cooperation among the Ministry of Planning, legislative and judicial authorities, other ministries, governorates, universities, the private sector, media and civil society, and acknowledged support from the United Nations Population Fund and other UN agencies.
Tamim attributed the census’s success to the efforts of statisticians, supervisors and enumerators, as well as strong citizen participation. He also noted the effective collaboration with the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Planning.
He thanked Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Council of Ministers, and other social and political activities for their support in making the national event a success.
