The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and Head of the UNAMI Mission, Mohammed Al-Hassan, confirmed today, Saturday, that the Iraqi constitution is one of the most advanced constitutions in the region, indicating that the Iraqi woman is an honorable model for women and history records in letters of light the names of Iraqi women who contributed to the march of humanity.
Al-Hassan stated in a speech on the occasion of International Women's Day and the celebration of Iraqi women, that "it is my pleasure to participate with you in this event on the occasion of International Women's Day and my happiness is greater as we celebrate Iraqi women, past, present and future," praising "the Iraqi woman and the sacrifices she has made over the years despite the difficult circumstances and challenges."
He added, "The Iraqi woman is an honorable model for women and history records in letters of light the names of Iraqi women who contributed to the march of humanity, and I am not talking about contemporary history, but about a long-standing civilizational legacy rooted deep in history, and therefore the sons and daughters of this country have the right to be proud of all of that." He continued, "Iraq today lacks a more vital and effective role for Iraqi women, as the presence of Iraqi women in decision-making positions is still limited, and I believe that "it is time for Iraqi women to occupy a larger space and more responsible positions in decision-making circles," explaining, "There is no harm in recalling history, but thinking must focus primarily on the future, how to change reality for the better and transform challenges into opportunities, and opportunities into practical and tangible programs."
He explained, "What prevents us from dreaming of seeing in the coming days an Iraqi woman as President of the Republic, Prime Minister, or Speaker of the House of Representatives?", stressing that "the Iraqi constitution is one of the most advanced constitutions in the region and there is a wide space for women to contribute to shaping the future of Iraq."
He pointed out that "the constitution and the judiciary are among the greatest pillars of the homeland and the citizen, and maintaining an honest judiciary is a sacred national duty," indicating that "Iraq is a unique country with a special status, as this uniqueness and special status must be taken advantage of to draw a roadmap towards the Iraq of tomorrow... the Iraq of hope... the Iraq of civilization... the Iraq of All Iraqis are equal on the basis of citizenship and belonging to this country."
Al-Hassan continued, "Iraq is rich in its cultural, civilizational and social heritage," noting that "Iraq is capable of developing plans and visions to empower Iraqi women in a manner that is consistent with and in harmony with its customs and traditions."
He concluded his speech, "Iraqi women live with their culture and civilizational heritage from Al-Faw in the south to Zakho in the north, as the international community and the United Nations will continue to support Iraqi women and their ambitions."
