The Ministry of Electricity announced on Sunday a loss of 5,500 megawatts following the complete cessation of Iranian gas supplies. The ministry emphasized its intensified coordination with the Ministry of Oil to address the shortfall and restore system stability.

A statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) detailed the ministry's strategic and emergency plans to enhance the national electricity system's capacities across production, transmission, and distribution sectors. The ministry is also working to revive stalled projects to recover lost generating capacities and improve production rates, relying on national gas, national fuel, and imported gas until government projects to rehabilitate national gas fields are completed.

The statement highlighted that the Iranian gas supply was halted for maintenance purposes for 15 days, impacting Baghdad, the central region, and the Middle Euphrates governorates, resulting in the significant loss of 5,500 megawatts.

It was noted that the agreed gas releases were 25 million cubic meters per day, but the current supply is only 7 million cubic meters, diverted from Baghdad and the central region to the southern region.

The Ministry of Electricity, in line with government directives, is increasing its coordination with the Ministry of Oil to compensate for the lost gas. Citizens are urged to consider the uncontrollable situation and maintain their electricity usage until the maintenance work is completed and gas supplies are restored to the required levels.
