International media outlets have praised Iraq's efforts in the field of climate and addressing desertification, as the French Agency - France 24 - highlighted in a report, translated by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Iraq's role in the field of the environment and combating desertification and citizens' interaction with afforestation campaigns and expanding green spaces, noting that "with the curtain raised on the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), attendees hope to conclude an agreement to release trillions of dollars to help countries exposed to climate risks adapt to climate change, including Iraq."
She explained that "Iraq has begun to pay great attention to climate aspects and environmental improvement conditions," noting that "citizens in all governorates are greatly interested in issues related to environmental affairs, and have begun to participate effectively in combating climate change and restoring the natural environment."
The agency praised "the great interest shown by Iraqis in afforestation and contributing to reducing desertification and pollution in cities." This report coincides with the launch of the twenty-ninth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change with the participation of Iraq in Baku.
The correspondent of the Iraqi News Agency (INA) said: "The activities of the twenty-ninth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change are on climate change and with the participation of Iraq in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.
She added that "the activities of the twenty-ninth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change were launched with the attendance of a delegation from Iraq headed by President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid."
She stressed that "this conference is the largest event organized by Azerbaijan so far and is being held in Azerbaijan for the first time in the region."
She continued that "the Host Country Agreement and other important documents were signed between the Government of Azerbaijan and the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change."
The government, under the direct guidance of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, has taken a number of measures to combat climate fluctuations, including the holding of the Iraq Climate Conference, which was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani in Basra Governorate on March 12-13, 2023, with regional, Arab and international attendance. The Prime Minister also launched a major tree-planting campaign in streets, squares, schools, universities, ministries and external roads in all governorates, which included planting five million trees and palm trees, in addition to the measures taken by the Ministries of Agriculture, Water Resources and Environment to reduce desertification and expand green areas.
