Justice Minister Khaled Shwani met with the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) mission in Iraq, Ikhtiyar Aslanov , on Saturday to discuss the issue of children accompanying their mothers from various nationalities in correctional facilities. The meeting focused on finding solutions to facilitate their repatriation to their home countries in coordination with relevant authorities
. In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry said Shwani emphasised Iraq’s commitment to supporting humanitarian organizations, strengthening partnerships with them, and facilitating the work of ICRC teams, particularly in humanitarian areas
. The discussion also covered the conditions of detainees in correctional facilities, with Shwani reiterating the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to ensuring the rights of inmates, including access to healthcare, education, and vocational training as part of its ongoing reform and rehabilitation efforts
. The two sides also explored mechanisms for cooperation to address the issue of children living with their mothers in prisons and ways to streamline their return to their home countries, in collaboration with the relevant authorities
. Aslanov praised Iraq’s efforts to improve the humanitarian conditions in its prisons, noting the positive feedback from ICRC teams during their visits to correctional facilities, where they observed constructive cooperation that contributed to improving conditions for detainees
