He explained that "the port of Al-Faw is a large project and is not for unloading goods, but is part of the development project," adding, "Since we took charge, we have placed this project among our priorities, and we have carried out continuous follow-up through periodic visits and meetings, and the follow-up of the Minister of Transportation with the ministry's staff."
He pointed out that "despite the regional and international challenges, this will not deter us from completing the project, as the government has taken multiple measures in implementing the project, including preparing the railway project, whether through the old road or the development road."
He stressed "the importance of regional cooperation, especially after the signing of the quadripartite agreement with Turkey, the UAE and Qatar," noting that "there is other work being done at the level of ministerial committees and executive teams, as well as the existing and ongoing work related to the implementation of designs in the development way, including the railway and the land road."
"Work on the port of Faw East and West Breakwater began during previous governments, and with the assumption of duties by the current government in 2022, the five projects of the port, which include the quays and the quay wall, have been reviewed," he added.
He added that "the five berths that were fully completed today had a completion rate of 31 percent before the current government took over, while the second project (the submerged tunnel) had a completion rate of 11.7 percent, and today it reached 58.47 percent, while the navigation canal project was 4.10 percent, today it reached 77.41 percent, as well as the excavation and marine backfilling project 22.39 percent, and today it has reached 79.33 percent, while the completion rates on the road linking the port of Al-Faw and um Qasr were 22.28 percent, today it has reached 92.42 percent."
He pointed out that "the achievements would not have been possible without the combined efforts of the government and its various ministries, the local government in Basra, and the Council of Representatives," noting that "the Al-Faw project is one of the complex projects that were implemented according to precise technical specifications, and under the supervision of the Italian company 'Technetel'.
There was also follow-up by the relevant official bodies such as the Ministry of Construction and Housing, the Ministry of Planning, the Advisory Board, and the University of Basra, which contributed important technical efforts."
The Prime Minister confirmed that "work is underway to study the requirements for operating the port in full, and negotiations are currently underway with specialized companies to manage this huge project, and submit the necessary offers to operate the port."
